In need of some help with sleep?
I can help.
Hi, I’m Erica.
Do you dread bedtime battles? Do you cut your alone time short because you know that inevitable night wakeups mean you need to go to bed as early as possible? Are you ready to stop co-sleeping but have no idea how to start?
By the time your child is a toddler or preschooler, they have the ability to sleep through the night independently. However, often they have already formed sleep habits and dependencies that stick with them into these later years, meaning they still aren’t sleeping independently. This doesn’t mean that you did anything wrong in the earlier years, just that if you’re ready to make a change now, your child is ready too!
The toddler years are also the time for kids to test limits, including at bedtime and at nighttime. They might start resisting going to sleep independently, wanting you to lay with them, or making lots of requests after you bid them goodnight. While these are things they will eventually grow out of, it can take years, and lack of sleep at night can result in difficult daytime behavior and delay learning.
As a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (or “BCBA”, to keep it simple), I’ve worked with many, many children over the last decade for whom sleep was a struggle. This chronic lack of sleep was affecting their daytime behavior and the well-being of themselves and their families. While often referred to me for daytime behavioral struggles, a root cause that needed to be addressed was lack of adequate and restorative sleep.
Many parents are suprised to learn that there are many options for teaching their child to sleep other than cry it out, including techniques that teach independence gradually or use positive reinforcement to motivate independent sleep. These methods are proven, effective, and life changing for parents and kids alike.
